Hondo Vista Ranch, located near Moore, Tx, has been part of the Richard family legacy for nearly five decades. Throughout its history, the Richard family has embraced the enduring belief that “Life is Better Outside,” a philosophy that has guided their connection to the land and their appreciation for the natural world.
This 2000 acre ranch in located partially in Frio County and partially in Medina County in a landscape where South Texas ranchlands, brush country, farmland, and dryland wildlife habitat meet. It reflects some of the defining ecological patterns of the South Texas Plains: heat, drought, thorny vegetation, productive soils, seasonal creeks, and a long history of ranching and agriculture. This region is marked by gently rolling to nearly flat terrain, the land is commonly covered by dense, low-growing brush, thorny shrubs, scattered trees, grasses, and cactus. The result is an ecosystem that may look sparse at first glance but supports a surprisingly rich web of life.
Over the years, the family became increasingly committed to implementing land management practices designed to strengthen habitat quality, improve ecological health, and support thriving wildlife populations. Through careful observation and experience, they came to understand that when soil, vegetation, and water resources are thoughtfully managed and allowed to reach their fullest potential, wildlife benefits substantially. As a result of these efforts, Hondo Vista Ranch has experienced notable improvements in the quality and overall health of its Whitetail Deer population, as well as growing numbers of Quail, Doves, Rio Grande Turkeys, songbirds, raptors, and many other native species. Situated within the Central Flyway, the ranch also provides important temporary refuge and habitat for a wide variety of migratory birds during their seasonal journeys.
For decades, the Richard family has worked closely with Texas Parks and Wildlife and remains deeply appreciative of the organization’s professional guidance, expertise, and support. Their continued goal is to serve as responsible and conscientious stewards of the land while developing Hondo Vista Ranch as a distinctive photography destination that showcases the remarkable habitat, biodiversity, and wildlife of the surrounding eco-region.
The newly constructed guest house sits atop a “Vista”, with stunning views of the ranch and surrounding landscapes. It has four guest rooms with two double beds in each room and private bathrooms, the large living area and kitchen showcase large windows so the views can be enjoyed while relaxing and dining.
The family’s hope is to share not only the processes, lessons, and experiences that have shaped their stewardship journey, but also the extraordinary natural beauty found across the ranch. Whether through photography, wildlife observation, or a quiet walk through the landscape, visitors are invited to experience the striking diversity of wildlife and habitat that make Hondo Vista Ranch a special and enduring place.
